CHAIR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BRAIN SCIENCES, COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWAREThe College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences (PBS, https://www.psych.udel.edu). We are looking for a collaborative leader to guide the department in a quickly evolving academic landscape and continue advancing the Department’s notable scholarly reputation and visibility. The Chair will provide academic and administrative leadership, manage and secure resources for the Department, promote excellence in scholarship, teaching, service, and community outreach, while fostering a collegial atmosphere that supports the Department’s mission and vision.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a leading scholar to strengthen and guide development of a department with thriving research, undergraduate teaching, and graduate training programs. Our Department is home to more than 60 graduate students, 1,200 undergraduate majors, and 400 minors. We offer undergraduate degrees in both Psychology and Neuroscience. Graduate research training is organized around four concentrations: Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical, Cognitive, and Social Psychology. We strive to promote the principles of equity and inclusion within our department and beyond through recruitment and retention, graduate training, clinical work, research, service, and teaching, as well as through open and productive dialogue.
PBS’s four concentrations are composed of leading scholars and educators, many of whom integrate neuroscience with behavioral research. PBS is well-connected to other departments within the College of Arts and Sciences and multiple departments within the College of Health Sciences and the College of Engineering. PBS plays a leading role in a new campus-wide Interdepartmental Neuroscience Graduate (ING) program, which connects many departments in several of the University’s colleges and supports multiple collaborative opportunities for PBS. A prospective department Chair will find opportunities to build on existing strengths and inspire new growth and connections across areas.
PBS is poised for further advancement. A new research and lab teaching facility (“Building X”) will open in Fall of 2024; next door, the Center for Biomedical and Brain Imaging (CBBI) houses state-of-the-art neuroimaging and neurostimulation equipment for both human and small-animal research. A new Siemens 3T Cima.X will be installed on campus in Summer 2024 to complement an existing Siemens 3T Prisma. The Institute for Community Mental Health (ICMH), led by PBS faculty, has a new home on the Health Sciences campus. A new Clinical Science MS program will begin next year, as part of a community-serving mental/behavioral health training clinic.
These new initiatives complement existing strengths of our physical and intellectual resources. Our faculty are renowned researchers and scholars who integrate psychological and brain science methods to study basic and applied questions. Our clinical science program is APA and PCSAS accredited. Our department also includes several full-time teaching-focused faculty who are dedicated to evidence-supported teaching, curriculum design, and assessment. Our many centers and facilities support this work; we have an NIH-funded COBRE Delaware Center for Neuroscience Research with Delaware State University. The Early Learning Center at UD supports the academic and research programs of the University and is a site for faculty and graduate student research. The Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA), a partnership among the University of Delaware, Christiana Care Health System, Nemours/Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children, and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, provides infrastructure and opportunity for innovative clinical and translational collaborations. In sum, we offer an exciting, innovative, and collaborative department that will support the successful candidate’s scholarly endeavors.
QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an area appropriate to Psychological or Brain Sciences. We are seeking an exceptional candidate in any area of this broad field to lead the Department in a time of significant opportunity. The successful candidate will have a record of excellence in scholarship and a history of obtaining external funding and gaining notable visibility within their field(s) of study. We desire candidates with sufficient leadership or management experience to indicate the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with faculty, professional staff, and the administration, while providing a vision for ways to continue to strengthen our department’s efforts.
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware offers exceptional educational experiences including integrated instruction, research, and public engagement. With 24 academic departments and more than 25 centers, programs and institutes, the College serves close to 7,000 undergraduate students and over 1,000 graduate students with CAS majors, but also every single University student through foundational course work. The College’s 600 faculty members emphasize the enduring value of an arts and science education and share a deep commitment to excellence in scholarship and all forms of creative and intellectual expression. The College has departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and features outstanding research and teaching facilities. Faculty and staff encourage and support innovative interdisciplinary collaborations and our students engage local, national, and global audiences through their research and other creative activities. With annual research expenditures of approximately $38 million and growing, the College currently houses several large, interdisciplinary grants with significant funding from the NIH and NSF.
