One of AF Bostäder’s prioritised global goals concerns protecting biodiversity and natural living environments. AF Bostäder promotes a great variety of species by means such as confining new construction to areas with already impervious surfaces and laying sedum roofs. Much remains to be done and several new initiatives are under way.
Biodiversity is defined as a great variation among organisms of all origins, i.e. diversity within species, between species and of different ecosystems. Preserving a great variety of species is a precondition for, among other things, interactions in nature, clean air and clean water, and pollination. It also protects against climate change.
Biodiversity is a high priority at AF Bostäder. In new construction this is seen in the form of sedum roofs, the well-considered choice of materials and plants, and the configuring of spaces where different species thrive. Fruit trees are preserved and there are insect hotels at several housing areas. AF Bostäder has also started work on laying stretches of meadow in cooperation with a landscape architect in both existing and newly-built housing areas, an initiative that will be expanded in the coming years.
