What is the weekend trading strategy? ›

Key weekend trading strategies include technical analysis, volatility tracking, and following news events that cause price movements. Benefits include flexibility to react to announcements in real-time, gap trading at market opens, and harnessing volatility.

Weekend trading hours on indices are from 4pm on Saturday to 6.40am on Monday (UTC+8)*. Positions open at 6.40am (UTC+8)* on a Monday will roll over into weekday positions when those markets resume 20 minutes later at 7am.

First, the per day volatility of stock returns is lower over weekends than during intraweek trading, so much lower that the three-day volatility for an entire weekend is only slightly greater than the one-day intraweek volatility. Second, stock returns are negative over weekends.

While the possibility of trading stocks on the weekend presents unique opportunities, it's not a strategy that suits all investors. The higher volatility, lower liquidity, and potential risks associated with off-hours trading may discourage some investors.

Does IG aim to profit from client losses? No. Our business model is based on providing individuals with the opportunity to trade the world's financial markets, in exchange for fair and proportionate transaction fees.

One reason is that many money managers don't work on Saturdays and Sundays. Without those managers taking the other side of trades, the market tends to be less liquid. A less liquid market tends to be more volatile. It also tends to have wider spreads between bid and ask.

Best Day of the Week to Sell Stock

Stock markets tend to rally on Friday due to short covering by traders to avoid paying interest on a short position over the weekend, as well as on any optimism traders might have for market-positive news during the weekend.

Stock prices fall on Mondays, following a rise on the previous trading day (usually Friday). This timing translates to a recurrent low or negative average return from Friday to Monday in the stock market.

Can I still trade if I'm marked as a pattern day trader? ›

If the account falls below the $25,000 requirement, the pattern day trader won't be permitted to day trade until the account is restored to the $25,000 minimum equity level.

Saturday and Sunday trading works differently depending on the market. Our Saturday and Sunday markets on GBP/USD, EUR/USD and USD/JPY are separate to their weekday equivalents. This means you can speculate on market developments over the weekend without having to alter an existing weekday position.

While trading on weekends can offer opportunities for increased volatility and potential gains, it also comes with risks such as illiquidity and wider spreads, making it challenging to execute trades at desired prices.

What Is the Weekend Effect? The weekend effect is a phenomenon in financial markets in which stock returns on Mondays are often significantly lower than those of the immediately preceding Friday.

If the price is very close to your profit objective, close before the weekend. Taking most of the profit on a trade is better than taking on the risk of holding through a weekend. Never hold a trade through the weekend just for the sake of holding it. Your strategy must indicate you are supposed to be in that trade.

Traditionally, the markets are open from 9:30 AM ET-4 PM ET during regular business days (Monday-Friday, except holidays). But with extended-hours trading and the Robinhood 24 Hour Market, you can execute trades from 8 PM ET Sunday until 8 PM ET Friday, with some restrictions.
