Food for thought. Vertikale landbouw gebruiikt 95% minder water en geen pesticiden. Klinkt bijna te mooi om waar te zijn. Wel een uitkomst daar waar we roofbouw plegen op ons bodem- en watersysteem en vervuilen. Huidige landbouw in Europa is einde verhaal? Afrika heeft de toekomst?Nederland heeft de kennis en (monitorings)techniek. En wat doen we in Friesland met deze nieuwe toekomstbeelden? #wabos #voedselzekerheid #holstein-Friesian #landbouw #zoetwater

For the organic cheese brand Hooidammer, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with FoodbyDesign, experts in the field of repositioning and design. This is something that really excites me—being actively involved in marketing and contributing to products that are good for people, animals, and nature. The cheeses from Hooidammer have received a new look. This is part of a contemporary, targeted repositioning of the Hooidammer brand for the Dutch and German market. The repositioning more accurately reflects that Hooidammer goes beyond organic. It's about a commitment to a more biodiverse, vibrant meadow that results in a rich, layered cheese flavor. The positioning can be summarized as: full of life, full of flavor. Are you interested in regenerative and organic food branding? I can definitely recommend working with FoodbyDesign. What is the key to make better food choices… establish transparency on what is on your plate. I love that Deloitte (thanks Arthur de Wilde, Frits Klaver + team) worked together with chef Joris Bijdendijk to analyze the restaurant operations and over 6000 food products in his 2 restaurants. Analysis included total environment impact ao carbon, nitrogen, water usage, water pollution and soil usage. Key conclusion is that environmental impact predominantly sits in the food ingredients and mostly in animal based produce. Follow up step is to explore how to better combine or replace animal produce with plant based alternatives. Can’t wait to see Joris’ and the restaurant business next steps in realizing a net positive restaurant. #futureoffood, #netpositive

When you eat more bean- (including pea) meals, you don't just eat healthy and tasty food, you also contribute to the future of (y)our planet. In the Netherlands, many organizations joined forces to help you to find your way to beans: the #BEANMEALBy the way: Saturday 10 February is World Pulses Day of the United Nations. Pulses is the agricutural group name for bean and pea crops. Pulses crops bind nitrogen from the air, and thus need less fertilizers. The fruits of pulses, beans and peas, contain high amounts of high-quality porteins. On our way to more plant-based proteins! Bon appétit!

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit a food night at the "Food for Thought" exhibition at the Scheepvaartmuseum. A view of Kadir van Lohuizen on our food system and the role of The Netherlands. It was definitely Food for Thought! Being somewhat familiar with food systems, I still gained many new and surprising insights. So many aspects of food systems are interrelated and we all (government, industry, academia and not to forget consumers themselves!) have role to play to realise a change.💡 90% of Dutch onions are exported and we import many, because Dutch consumers do not like too many peels around the onion and certain flavours.💡 Fish caught in waters close to NL, but are shipped to China where the bones are removed and then shipped back.💡Many vegetables in our supermarket are grown in Kenia and often also cut and pre-packaged there before being shipped.💡 Mega farms with cattle for beef in US, at size beyond imagination. And farms in Saudi Arabia where cows need to be continuously cooled because of the hot environment. It sparked discussion. Is eating only local the solution, or will that impact economies of developing countries that rely on export? Although storage and transport of food is needed, is it from a global perspective not wise to select areas where production can be most efficient and sustainable? How about the need for drinking water, is making water from sea water the solution? How can it be made easier for consumers to adopt healthy and sustainable dietary choices? Etc, etc.And the role I can play? Ensuring that health and sustainability go hand in hand in the food (system) transition we have to make. And in the innovative environment of Wageningen University & Research, I know that my colleagues in other disciplines across the whole food chain are working on future solutions too.

In the Netherlands, The Council of Animal Affairs’ public survey on the State of the Animals in 2019 found that people generally support zoos, however, they also have certain expectations about how zoo animals should be treated. The Council believes that the changing attitudes towards animals in society will increasingly influence how zoos are perceived.Zoos have legal obligations to support education, nature conservation, and biodiversity. They are also responsible for taking care of the well-being of the animals in their care. How can we understand the role of zoos in relation to scientific knowledge in these areas, both now and in the future? Additionally, what expectations does society have for zoos? The Council will examine the necessary conditions for shaping the future of zoos and explore appropriate directions for their development. The report will be delivered in early 2024.Raad voor Dierenaangelegenheden (RDA) #zoos #conservation #animalwelfare #development #society

There is simply no way of having any form of animal mass #farming without cruelty and abuse. Even in the organic animal farming. A radical #rethink on if we really need to eat meat every day. How would it be if we in the developed world scale back on meat consumption to once every two weeks? One guaranteed outcome: Farmers will reduce livestock production, focusing more on plant-based #agriculture. This #change will free up land and resources for growing crops, potentially leading to increased availability of plant-based foods. That in turn would mean more food for all humans AND space for wilderness and #biodiversity Everyone wins - because #sustainability is the greatest equalizer of our time.
