Holy Rosary Student Council Visits ‘grand-friends’ - Times Leader (2024)

Last month, the members of the Holy Rosary Student Council visited The Laurels, located in Old Forge, to spread some Christmas joy. Each month for the past several years, the students have visited their “grand-friends,” and this month was no exception. Some of the students distributed homemade brownies while others played bingo and helped the residents. Before leaving for the night, the students gave a small Christmas gift to each resident. The Student Council members and their moderator, Mrs. Lisa Casey, would like to thank the staff and the residents of The Laurels for allowing them to share these precious moments with them.

Novena for Life to Begin

Each January, Holy Rosary School celebrates and reaffirms our respect for life by praying a Novena for Life. Our Novena will begin on Wednesday, January 13th at 8:30 a.m. with a Holy Hour for Life for grades 4-8, and it will conclude with a Mass for Life for the entire school community on Friday, January 22nd. at 9:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. On each of the nine days, our prayer intention will be for all people to respect the sanctity of life. To make our prayers visible through action, the Student Council will be collecting baby items to be donated to Catholic Social Services, and soaps and other toiletries to be given to their “grand-friends” at the Laurels, an assisted living facility which Student Council members visit each month. We will also continue our clothing drive for Kid’s Closet, as well as our collection food items for the Greater Pittston Food Pantry. Please join us in prayer on the 13th and the 22nd, and if you would like to donate any items mentioned above, please bring them to Holy Rosary School between the hours of 9:00 and 3:00 on any school day. School families may send items in with their children, and thank you in advance for your support.

History Day Fair

On Tuesday, January 19th, Holy Rosary School will host its second annual History Fair. Research projects, created by students in 6th and 8th grades, will be displayed and judged on the theme, “Innovations in History: Impact and Change.” In March, eligible students will compete at the regional National History Day competition at Penn State, Wilkes-Barre. Our competitors this year surely have “big shoes to fill” because in 2009, Holy Rosary students presented very competitive projects on the theme “Individuals in History: Actions and Legacy.” After placing 2nd and 3rd at National History Day Regional Competition, a group of 6th grade students and an individual 8th grade student went on to represent Holy Rosary School at the State Competition, held at Millersville University. We offer our best wishes to our 6th and 8th grade students who are working to have another successful year in the 2010 National History Day competitions.

Catholic Schools Week Information

Holy Rosary School, along with all Catholic Schools across the nation, will celebrate our annual Catholic Schools’ Week beginning with Mass on January 31st at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. An Open House will be held following the Mass, and information for registrations for the 2010-2011 school year will be available. Please join us as we celebrate this year in a special way as we prepare for our 75th Anniversary events to be held in the spring. Additional information on Catholic Schools’ Week events and 75th Anniversary events will be sent home within the next few weeks.

Gift Certificate

Gift certificate sales are held in the Holy Rosary Church Hall each Thursday from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. School families may send in orders on Wednesday to be filled on Thursday. We have been informed that a few stores have recently lowered their percentages. The stores affected are: Wendy’s and Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Sunoco, and Exxon. The new order forms will reflect the changes. Please remember that Sears gift cards can be used at Kmart and Landsend, and several new stores have been added to the pre-order form. They are Ace Hardware, Advance Auto Parts, Amazon.com, Auto Zone, Ulta Salons, and Subway.. If you have any questions, you may contact Teresa at 457-9001.

Recycling

In addition to cartridge recycling we also have cell phone recycling. Select cell phones can be dropped off in the same location and recycled for credit. For more information or for a list of qualifying cartridges, visit www.fundingfactory.com or contact Mrs. Skutack at 457-2553.

Labels & Box Tops

Campbell’s Soup labels and Box Tops for Education are being collected at Holy Rosary School. These programs enable us to provide educational resources that may be unaffordable through our regular budget. They offer exciting merchandise like computers, software, sports equipment, reference materials, science and art items, even musical instruments. Please continue your support of these programs by sending in your labels to the school office or by placing them in the church vestibule. If you have any questions, please contact the school’s office. Also, please check labels for expiration dates. They can be sent in immediately and processed before they expire; there is no need to wait until you accumulate a quantity.
