The Christian Education Committee of the Second Presbyterian Church, Parsonage Street, Pittston conducted their annual Christmas program which was a play entitled, “The Backward Christmas Pageant”. Both parents and students participated and after the program a reception was held in the Fellowship Hall followed by a visit from Santa Claus. Plans are moving fast on the upcoming St. Rocco’s Church Holy Name Society Palm Sunday Smoker. This Palm Sunday Smoker will be the 61st. A wonderful menu is planned to coincide with the music of Danny Argo and Frankie Galoardi. Next meeting of the Holy Name Society will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at Tony’s Pizza at City Line Plaza. All members are urged to attend. Tickets for the smoker are available from committee members and can be obtained at St. Rocco’s Rectory, cost is $12.00. Call the rectory at 654-2914 from 9 a.m. to noon.

A Spring Craft and Gift Fair will be held on March 2, 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at St. Maria Goretti Banquet Hall, Laflin Road, Laflin
20+ venders will be offering a wide variety of craft and gift items including Home made baked goods and candy, Victorian Style items, placemats and runners, popcorn shirts, candles, soap, crocheted towels, Embroidery, Raggedy Ann Dolls, decorated horse shoes, purses, relishes, sports collectibles, Mary Kay, Tastefully Simple.
Admission is free with plenty of free parking. A Chinese auction and raffle will also be offered. Food will be served all day with Take Outs available.

Blue Army Vigil
The next monthly First Friday Reparation Vigil to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary will be held Friday, March 6 at St. Joseph’s Oblate Seminary in Laflin.
Fr. Paul McDonnell will serve as host for the vigil. Young adults are most welcome. Devotions begin Friday evening at 8 p.m. with recitation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, during which time confessions are heard.
Meditation of the 15 Mysteries of the Rosary will also take place at this time. Mass of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated at 8:55 p.m. followed by benediction, litany, and consecration to the Sacred Heart. Vigil concludes with the crowning of the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, Word Apostolate Pledge, Fatima prayers and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The vigil concludes with scapular enrollment at 10:15 p.m.
Hunterdon Hills Trip
The Women’s Association of the First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre is sponsoring a bus trip on Monday, June 8 to the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse at Hampton, New Jersey. The cost of the entire trip including show and dinner is $75.00 per person with a $40.00 deposit for each reservation. Balance is due by May 1st. Craft Fair

Palm Sunday Smoker
St. Rocco’s Church Holy Name Society officers and members held a meeting to make plans for their annual Palm Sunday Smoker on April 11. This year’s smoker will mark the 61st gathering and promises to be as successful as past events. At this meeting, chaired by President Jarrett Ferentino, plans for the smoker were discussed. Any male church members of St. Rocco’s Church wishes to join the Holy Name Society should contact Secretary Treasurer, John Trombetta. Annual dues are payable at the next meeting which will be held at 7 p.m. on February 11, at Tony’s Pizza, City Line Plaza. Tickets for the annual Palm Sunday Smoker will be available at the next meeting.

The Stations of the Cross will be celebrated every Friday during Lent at 7:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church. This Friday we will be using Everyone’s Way of the Cross.
During the season of Lent we will once again have baskets in each of our Churches. All donated food items will be brought to the Pittston Area Food Pantry in the former Seton Catholic building.
This Sunday, February 22, all the children and parents from our Religious Education program will have the opportunity to participate in a Family Lenten Preparation Program. The program will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. during the regular Religious Education time. We hope that at least one parent will taken the opportunity to come and work with their child(ren) on the Lenten project. The next Confirmation class will be held this Sunday, February 22, 2009 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the hall at Blessed Sacrament.
Our Parish Community Choir is reorganizing in preparation for the Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation (March 22, 2009), Lent and the Easter Triduum. The choir will meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in St. Mary, Help of Christians Church. Beginning in March, the choir will be meeting on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All members of our parish community are welcome and encouraged to be part of this most important ministry.
Scripture Study will meet Tuesday of this week from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Religious Education Center.
Bishop Martino has asked us to implement his Directives which grew out of the Called to Holiness and Mission Planning Process. His expectation is that all parishes will work with their cluster to develop a plan to implement both their particular recommendations and the general recommendations. Our cluster includes Blessed Sacrament, Hughestown, St. Mary’s Assumption, St. Mary, Help of Christians, St. John the Evangelist, St. Rocco, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Pittston. Bishop Martino has directed us that:
Blessed Sacrament, Hughestown, St. Mary Assumption, Pittston and St. Mary Help of Christians, Pittston will consolidate no later than July 2012 at the St. Mary Help of Christians site. The Church buildings of Blessed Sacrament and St. Mary Assumption will close no later than July 2012.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Pittston and St. Rocco, Pittston will consolidate no later than July 2012 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel site. St. Rocco Church building will close no later than July 2012.
The creation of a Partnership among St. John the Evangelist, Pittston and the two newly consolidated parishes by July 2012.
On the first Friday of each month Communion is brought to those who are unable to participate in Sunday Mass because of age or health.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with anyone seriously ill, anticipating a serious operation, or quite elderly.

Beginning this Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, there will be Mass celebrated at 7:00 p.m. every Wednesday night during the Lenten season, rather than following the usual novena format with Exposition/Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Many people attend daily Mass during the Lenten season and so they can attend the weekly Novena to St. Joseph and Mass at the same time.

On Sunday, February 22, preparation begins at 9:00 a.m. and the actual making of pierogi starts at 10:00 a.m. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, making and cutting dough begins at 7:30 a.m., rolling starts at 8:00 a.m., pinching starts at 9:00 a.m., cooking and cooling starts at 9:00 a.m. Clean up will begin at 2:00 p.m. each day.

Tickets for the Pasta Dinner were recently mailed. Each family should have received four (4) tickets. Please try to purchase all four or sell them to friends or family members. We truly depend on this fund raiser to defray our operating expenses as it is one of our biggest sources of extra income. The cost has remained at $8 per person. What a great deal! This delicious homemade meal includes salad, all you can eat pasta and homemade sausage, beverage and desert!

David Betts, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart/St. Stanislaus Church, Wilkes-Barre, and chaplain of the Veterans Hospital, Wilkes-Barre Twp., will be the homilist for the Mass. The music ministry for the evening will be the choirs of St. Mary’s and SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches. Following the service, refreshments will be served in St. Mary’s School auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
