What time should candles be lit? ›

It is appropriate to light candles after dusk. An exception would be if it is a rainy or overcast day, and then they may be lit a little earlier in the afternoon. Candles should not be lit for brunches or luncheons.

Caution: Shabbat candles must be lit before sunset. It's a desecration of the Shabbat to light candles after sunset. Shabbat candle lighting times listed are 18 minutes before sunset, however please allow yourself enough time to perform this time-bound mitzvah at the designated time; do not wait until the last minute.

If one does not have a long candle, another suggestion is to turn off the electric lights, and then turn them back on in honor of Shabbos.

It is ideal if they burn about three hours - from the start of Shabbat, until bedtime. Most Shabbat candles burn that long, or longer. There is no official minimum time, but thirty minutes or more is what I would consider 'minimum'.

A good rule of thumb is to let your candle burn at least one hour per inch of container diameter. For instance, if you were burning a brand new luxury candle from the Harlem Candle Co., you should let it burn for at least 3 hours during the first time because the container diameter is around 3 inches.

Plus, your candle will start to smoke and release soot. Avoid this by always following the manufacturer's instructions. In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than four hours and cool for at least two hours before relighting.

You may not light Shabbat (or Jewish festival) candles before plag ha'mincha. The candles must burn until at least dark (tzeit ha'kochavim) and someone must be there to see the light from the candles after dark.

One may light Shabbat candles until sunset (generally 18 minutes after "candle-lighting time") but not a moment after sunset. To light Shabbat candles after sunset is to desecrate Shabbat. One may sometimes ask a non-Jew to light for her during twilight (in America, up to roughly 40 minutes after sunset).
